Caring for Your
Watercolor Supplies
Your Whimsy Gram watercolor supplies are thoughtfully designed to help you enjoy a relaxing and creative painting experience. With a little care, your materials can stay beautiful and ready for your next whimsical adventure.
Watercolor Paints
- Use only a drop of water to activate the paints using the pipette and begin to soften them.
- Place about 7–10 drops of water into each well of the palette using the pipette.
- Avoid flooding the paint wells with excess water — you can always make more color later.
- Using a wet brush, rub the paint one color at a time, getting paint on the brush and depositing it into the water on the palette. Do this a few times (each color needs a different amount — blue usually takes 3–4 times, while yellow may take 7–8).
- Do this for each color you plan to use. Hint: try white with a tinge of blue for clouds, water, rain, puddles, and glass.
- Don't discard paint in the palette at the end of your session — simply let it dry. Next time, add a few drops of water, stir, and it's ready to go again.
- Allow paints on the paint strip to fully dry before putting it back into the plastic sleeve.
Brushes
- Rinse brushes gently with clean water after painting.
- Shape the bristles softly with your fingers.
- Lay brushes flat or upright to air dry.
Color Test Sheet
- Use this to test the color of your paint. If it's not dark enough, add more paint. If it's too dark, add a couple more drops of water.
- It's also a great place to try blending colors.
- The Wink elephant is a great way to test out moving the paintbrush around before you start the painting.
Sponge
Your sponge is an important little watercolor helper.
When painting, allow the area next to your current section to dry before moving on. If you paint too quickly, the colors may run together. If that happens, simply use the corner of the sponge to gently lift away excess water or paint.
The sponge is also helpful after rinsing your brush. Lightly tap your brush on the sponge before picking up more paint to remove extra water and keep the colors in your palette from becoming too diluted.
If your sponge gets paint on it, no worries — simply rinse it out and let it dry for your next creative session.
Watercolor Paper
We use premium 300 GSM watercolor paper in all Whimsy Gram kits because it's specially designed to handle watercolor techniques beautifully. While the paper is durable, using too much water at once may cause slight warping or allow colors to bleed outside the lines.
For the best watercolor experience:
- Use light layers of watercolor.
- Allow paint to dry between layers.
- Build color gradually for a soft, beautiful finish.
Storage
Store your Whimsy Gram kit in a cool, dry place away from extreme heat, moisture, or direct sunlight.
Most importantly — have fun, relax, and enjoy the creative process. Every painting is part of your own whimsical story.
